Is Om Malik sad?

E46CA02F-CBB8-465C-B87D-0CE9F8776EA0.jpg

Looking at the comparison chart of growth for Tech Crunch, Mashable and Giga Om, the various appearances of Michael Arrington and Pete Cashmore on TV I wonder if Om Malik is sad, or, if he needs to be sad. I mean I would be. He’s the only guy of the three having a real background in journalism (he wrote for Forbes, Business 2.0, etc.), and, only he took venture capital if I’m not mistaken.

How would you feel? What would you do? Give up or try to fill another niche? What might his plan be for the future?

Update: Om Malik replied. Thanks

  • I would say that TechCrunch is increasingly becoming consumer oriented… just look at the comments on most posts. I don’t read GigaOM much, but I guess it could appeal to professionals who dislike the direction TechCrunch is taking. It might not beat TC on audience size, but possibly on audience quality.

  • yes gigaom is targeted towards the people who want in depth analysis and not just a PR service which techcrunch is now slowly turning into :(
Mashable is more of a aggregation of techmemes
the other place that gigaom loses out is on their volumes of posts they publish daily
but i do love all three but they do cater to different audiences :)

  • GigaOm caters to a much different audience than mashable and techcrunch. And basically that niche audience is what is valuable.

  • For me GigaOm’s, or, ReadWriteWeb’s content for example, is of more quality than the other two. Mashable is quite good for Social Media News, even if it’s sensational.

I’m wondering though if the quality content of GigaOm with fewer readers (how many GigaOm Pro subscribers might there be?) makes him “happy” in terms of revenue.

  • GigaOM and RRW are 2 top notch blogs. I personally like mashable more than TC, but GigaOm and RRW provide better coverage and reading experience, at least for me.

I actually also paid for the GigaOm Pro account, and I hope that others would too. I sure hope that Om Malik is neither sad, nor that he would change his current reporting style. Sometimes being the most popular kid on the block is not the most important thing.

  • I truly admire the founders of all three sites. Most people don’t have the courage or tenacity that it takes to launch a new media enterprise. IMHO, the demonstrated spirit and passion to start something from scratch will be remembered long after these page view stats are forgotten.

  • GigaOM content is syndicated on the New York Times, CNN, and Salon.com, which counts for much much much more pageviews and influence than this drive-by, nasty, ill-informed slam of a post would suggest. To take just the first example, neither TechCrunch or Mashable is syndicated by the Times, the only national (some would say international) publication with significant influence. You really think going to Alexa alone will you tell you anything meaningful about these sites’ place in the national discourse on technology, let alone the one in the Valley?
